ACHA 2026-27

Thrown objects: a penalty shot in the defending zone, a game misconduct out of the rink

Rule numbers: NCAA 55.3 NCAA 55.4 NCAA 55.5 ACHA Additions 59.1

If anyone from the defending team, coaches and non-playing personnel included, sends a stick, a piece of one or any other object at the puck or the puck carrier inside the defending zone, the officials let the play finish; if no goal results, a penalty shot is awarded. The ACHA additions list this as 'Rule 59.1 Interference' and point to NCAA 55.3; cite 55.3 when you write it up. If the goalkeeper has been removed and the thrown object prevents a clear shot at the open net, a goal is awarded. Throwing a stick or part of one out of the playing surface is now a game misconduct.

if a goal is not scored, a penalty shot shall be awarded to the non-offending team.

NCAA 2026-27 and 2027-28 Men's and Women's Ice Hockey Rules and Interpretations (IH28), Rule 55.3, p. 66 (PDF p. 69)
On the ice
Let the play finish; penalty shot if no goal (penalty shot or optional minor under 55.3).
Scoresheet
Stick thrown out of the playing area: game misconduct, no time posted.

Example

A defenseman's broken stick is tossed at the puck carrier in the defending zone and the play ends without a goal. The referee awards a penalty shot.

Common mistake: Stopping play immediately, or calling only a minor for an object thrown at the puck in the defending zone.
