Scoring during a delayed minor: the minor goes away
Rule numbers: NCAA 15.1 NCAA 15.2 NCAA 15.3 NCAA 16.2
When the team in possession is fouled, the whistle is delayed until the offending team has possession and control. If the non-offending team scores during the delay, a signaled minor is not imposed; majors are imposed regardless. With two signaled minors, the offending team's captain picks which one is washed out. If the team was already shorthanded by a minor and a further minor is signaled before the goal, the goal stands, the signaled penalty is assessed, and the first minor already being served ends. A goal scored on a penalty shot never releases a penalty. NFHS 4-10-2 differs: there the washed-out minor is still written on the scoresheet.
major penalties shall be imposed in the normal manner regardless of whether or not a goal is scored.
- On the ice
- Even strength: goal counts and no one sits for the signaled minor.
- Clock
- Already shorthanded by a minor: the new minor goes up and the first minor being served comes off.
- Scoresheet
- Even strength: the washed-out minor is not imposed.
Example
5-on-5. A delayed hooking minor is signaled on Team B and Team A scores. The hook is not imposed.
Common mistake: Writing the washed-out minor on the sheet out of NFHS habit, or washing out the new minor when the team was already short by a minor.
