Goalkeeper's major or misconduct is now served by a teammate
Rule numbers: NCAA 28.1 NCAA 28.2
A goalkeeper never goes to the penalty box for a minor, and under the 2026-28 book the same is true for a major or misconduct. For a minor, the captain names a teammate who was on the ice at the moment of the foul, and the choice cannot be changed; a player who is already penalized may not serve it. For a major or misconduct, a teammate who was on the ice when play was stopped serves it immediately, designated by the coach through the captain. If the goalkeeper's major plus game misconduct coincides with a major or game misconduct to the other team, no one has to serve the goalkeeper's penalties, since the goalkeeper has been ejected. The goalkeeper is still the one charged.
A goalkeeper shall not be sent to the penalty bench for an offense which incurs a major or misconduct penalty
- On the ice
- The goalkeeper stays in net (unless ejected); a skater goes to the box.
- Clock
- Post the time under the serving skater's number.
- Scoresheet
- Charge the penalty to the goalkeeper and note the server.
Example
Team A's goalkeeper gets a misconduct. The coach names A14, who was on the ice when play stopped. A14 sits the ten minutes and the goalkeeper stays in net.
Common mistake: Sending the goalkeeper to the box for a major or misconduct, or letting a player from the bench (or one already penalized) serve it.
