Delayed penalty, then a goal: on the scoresheet but not on the clock
Rule numbers: NFHS 4-10-1 NFHS 4-10-2
The referee's arm goes up when the team without the puck commits a foul, and play carries on until that team gains control. Suppose the fouled team puts the puck in the net before that happens, whether the sides were even or the scorers were down a player. Then the first of the signaled minors never takes a skater off the offending team: the scorer still writes it down, but nobody serves a second of it. Other fouls on that play, or anything after the whistle, are handled as usual. NCAA treats this differently (the signaled minor is simply not imposed), and the NFHS bookkeeping matters because the written-down minor still counts toward a player's five-penalty total under 4-5.
- On the ice
- Goal stands; no one sits for the first delayed minor.
- Clock
- No time is posted for the first delayed minor; a second signaled minor is served.
- Scoresheet
- The first delayed minor is recorded even though no time is served.
Example
Teams are five aside. The referee signals a hooking minor against Team B, and before any Team B player can touch the puck, Team A buries a shot. The hook is entered against the Team B player on the sheet, and play restarts at full strength.
Common mistake: Handling the washed-out minor the NCAA way and leaving it off the sheet, or loading two minutes onto the penalty clock once the goal is in.
