NFHS 2026-27

Misconduct: ten minutes for the player, no shorthanded team

Rule numbers: NFHS 4-4-1 NFHS 4-4-2

A misconduct sits the player (goalkeepers included) for ten minutes, but the team sends out a replacement right away, so it never plays short because of the misconduct itself. When the same player also gets a minor or a major, a teammate goes into the box with him and comes back on once the minor or major time is up. After the ten minutes end, the penalized player stays in the box until the next whistle. That means two players in the box and two times to track.

On the ice
Misconduct alone: no shortage. Minor plus misconduct: shorthanded for the minor only.
Clock
Run the minor or major for the substitute and the 10:00 for the penalized player.
Scoresheet
Both penalties charged to the penalized player.

Example

A skater is given a minor and a misconduct. A teammate joins him in the box and returns to the ice when the two minutes run out; the penalized skater sits out his ten minutes and then waits for the next whistle.

Common mistake: Playing a team shorthanded for a misconduct on its own, or forgetting to send the extra player when a minor comes with the misconduct.
