How a penalty shot is run
Rule numbers: NFHS 4-7-4 NFHS 4-7-5 NFHS 4-7-6 NFHS 4-7-7
The puck starts on the center faceoff spot. When the referee signals, the shooter skates in and must keep moving toward the net until the puck is shot or has passed the goal line extended, and there is a single shot with no rebound. Only a player ruled a goalkeeper may defend; the goalkeeper must stay in the crease until the shooter touches the puck and may not throw the stick. If the goalkeeper fouls and the shot fails, the shooter gets another try. All other players go to their benches and stay quiet. If anyone else interferes with or distracts the shooter and the shot fails, it is taken again and that player gets a misconduct.

- Record the penalty-shot result, and the goal if one is scored.
Example
The goalkeeper comes out of the crease before the shooter touches the puck, and the shot misses. The shooter gets another penalty shot.
Common mistake: Allowing a rebound or a second shot, or letting the goalkeeper leave the crease before the shooter has touched the puck.
