NFHS 2026-27

Line change procedure: visitors first, then home

Rule numbers: NFHS 2-5-4 NFHS 2-5-5

NFHS gives the home team the last change, and the referee runs the timing with hand signals. Once the referee points to where the faceoff will be, the visitors get a five-second window to change. Then the referee raises a hand toward the visiting bench, which opens a five-second window for the home team. Lowering that hand cues a short whistle from the official with the puck, who drops it within five seconds. Deliberately stalling a change earns one warning that covers the whole game; the next deliberate stall is a minor, served by a player the captain picks. Once the change is done, no further changes are allowed before the puck drops unless a penalty is called.

Clock
Second intentional delay: 2:00 minor served by a player of the captain's choice.
Scoresheet
The first delay is a warning; a repeat is a minor (captain's choice).

Example

The home team was warned in the first period for stalling a change. In the third it stalls on purpose again. The referee calls a minor, with the captain picking who serves it.

Common mistake: Issuing a second warning, or letting the home team keep changing after the referee's hand has dropped.
