NFHS 2026-27

Slurs, spitting and abuse of officials: game disqualification

Rule numbers: NFHS 6-1-6 NFHS 6-1-7 NFHS 6-1-9

Three NFHS conduct rules lead straight to a GD. First, a slur based on race, ethnicity or gender aimed at an official or anyone else, by a player, coach or other team member, at any point from warm-up until after the game. Second, deliberately making physical contact with an official (touching, tripping, holding, pushing or any other abuse), or attempting it, at any time before, during or after the game. Third, spitting at anyone: an opponent, a teammate or an official. Each GD brings a major and suspensions, and the book recommends reporting every GD to the state association.

Example

At a stoppage, a coach aims an ethnic slur at an opposing player. The coach gets a GD and has to leave the bench area.

Common mistake: Answering a slur with only a minor or misconduct, or treating an attempted shove of an official as anything less than a GD.
