Penalty shot or the minor? The fouled team chooses
Rule numbers: USAH 406(a) USAH 406(b)
If the foul behind a penalty shot would normally be a minor or bench minor, the non-offending team may choose, before the shot, to take the minor instead. If it takes the shot, the offending team is not also reduced in strength. If the foul would normally be a major or match penalty, that penalty is imposed in addition to the shot, whether or not a goal is scored, and misconducts are served as usual. Who shoots depends on the foul: where a specific player was fouled the referee names that player; otherwise the captain chooses a shooter from those who were on the ice when the foul happened. Only a goalkeeper, substitute goalkeeper or temporary goalkeeper may defend the shot.
If the penalty shot is selected, the offending team shall not be reduced in on-ice strength as a result of the infraction.
- On the ice
- Shot chosen on a minor-type foul: the offending team stays at full strength.
- Clock
- Minor chosen instead: post the minor. Major-type foul: post the major as well as taking the shot.
Example
A Team A forward on a breakaway is hooked from behind and loses the scoring chance. The referee awards a penalty shot with an optional minor. Team A chooses the shot, so Team B does not also serve a minor.
Common mistake: Awarding the shot and also putting the minor on the clock.
