Not modelled for this code
Only the USA Hockey rule set is available in this version of the engine.
Game clock
Every preset names its source. Loading one replaces the game in progress and parks the clock five seconds before the first entry; press Play or Next change to bring it in.
Changing the period length or the number of periods keeps every entry at its own period and clock reading. The rule code is chosen with the buttons at the top.
Running a session
- Pick the rule code at the top: USA Hockey, NFHS, NCAA or ACHA. The rulings, the penalty lengths and the preset situations follow it.
- Open the presentation view in a second window. Share that window on a video call, or drag it to the projector. Keep this window for yourself.
- When the referee reports to the box, choose the team, the number and what was called, then press Record penalty. It is stamped with the time on the clock.
- Play runs the clock. Whistle stops play and counts as a stoppage, so players waiting for a whistle leave the box. Freeze pauses to talk without a stoppage.
- Press Goal for the team that scored. The simulator works out whether a penalty ends.
- Reverse, the step buttons and the slider replay any moment. Next change jumps to the next thing that happens. Stopping a rewind never adds a whistle to the game.
- With Stop at each recorded whistle ticked, a replay stops at every recorded penalty, goal and whistle, with the whistle or goal horn. Press Play to go on.
- In Situations, Replay this game under another code keeps every entry and applies the other code’s rules, so you can compare the calls.
Reading the penalty bench
- Bright time: on the scoreboard and making the team short-handed.
- Pale time: coincidental or misconduct time. It is served, but it is not on the scoreboard.
- Grey: a delayed penalty waiting for a spot on the clock.
- WHISTLE: time served, leaves at the next stoppage.
- SUB: a substitute who returns when the penalty on the clock ends.
Good to know
- Both windows must be in the same browser on the same computer. If the new window does not open, open this page again and add #present to the end of the address.
- Keys: Space play or whistle, R reverse, F freeze, arrows one second (Shift for ten), N and P next and previous change, [ and ] speed, H horn.
- A Captain’s choice ruling comes with buttons: pick what the captain chose and the clock, bench and scoresheet follow. A Check ruling is a reminder for the referee, such as a player reaching a penalty limit.
- To force a penalty on or off the clock, edit it in the Game log and change Coincidental.
- Tick Team official for a penalty to a coach, and use Served by # for the player who serves a goalkeeper’s, bench, team official’s or injured player’s penalty.
- Each ruling cites the rule it rests on for the code in use. Anything the engine does not model for a code is listed under Rule set; make that call yourself.
- The scoresheet columns OFF, START and ON follow the USA Hockey off-ice convention. They are shown for every code as a generic training display.
- This is an independent training aid. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by USA Hockey, the NFHS, the NCAA or the ACHA. Always follow your governing body’s current rulebook and your supervisor.

About the simulator
The simulator models how penalties are timed and recorded under each code: penalty lengths, coincidental penalties, delayed penalties, goals that release a player, and what the penalty timekeeper writes on the scoresheet. Where a code's rule is not modelled, the simulator says so instead of borrowing another code's answer.
Scenarios are paraphrased from the governing bodies' own case material and examples, each with its source. The scoresheet columns follow a generic off-ice layout; check your league's own scoresheet.
